Secret to Youthful Eyes: Tear Trough Fillers

Dr. Sophie explains how tear trough fillers renew and refresh the area around your eyes

Our eyes are one of our most important features. They show emotion through their movements, and are the first place other peoples’ gazes fall when they look at you—they don’t call it eye contact for nothing! Because the skin around the eyes is so thin, the area below the eyes - the tear trough - is one of the first places to show signs of aging.

Starting in our late 20s to early 30s, we begin to lose some of the underlying fat in our mid-cheek region resulting in a hollowing or shadow causing our eyes to look more sunken and tired.

This hollowing, often combined with dark circles, can cause people to look tired. Eye creams and other skin products are very helpful in keeping the skin healthy and youthful. But there is another, longer-lasting fix to this common aging problem: tear trough filler.

Tear trough fillers

A tear trough is a deep crease that creates a semi-circle shape between your lower eyelid and your mid-cheek. Tear trough, or undereye, filler is when hyaluronic acid injections are used to restore volume loss in the undereye region.

Park’s expertly trained injectors can provide amazingly natural results to have you looking refreshed, rested, and youthful. Unfortunately, the treatment cannot improve pigmentations, so we can always recommend an eye cream to help with dark circles.

Making the treatment as painless as possible

Like all our procedures, we use many techniques to keep your experience as comfortable as possible. We often use a numbing cream so the little pokes from the treatment are less intense.

Our injectors also employ a cannula technique while injecting in the tear trough region. This means you only get one poke in the mid-cheek region. Then we feed a cannula, aka blunt-tipped needle, closer to the tear trough area to inject small amounts of hyaluronic acid filler to restore volume under the eyes.

The fillers themselves have some freezing in them, which helps manage any further discomfort. If our pain-minimizing techniques aren’t quite cutting it for you, we can offer you a stress ball to squeeze.

Things to know before and after your appointment

You’ll always receive pre- and post-care instructions as well as an opportunity to ask any questions you have before the procedure. But, if you’re considering the treatment, here are a couple of things you should know: It can be common to experience mild swelling and/or bruising in the days following your procedure. Avoiding alcohol, exercise and excessive heat in the days leading up to and a few days after the procedure will help prevent unwanted side effects.

Your injector will often give you a cold compress to use right after we put the filler in. A moisturizer with calming agents in it, like arnica, aloe, hinokitiol, and sea whip can help reduce the appearance of swelling and redness -- let us know if you’d like any product recommendations!

Fillers + other Park treatments

Tear trough filler typically lasts for longer than a year. You can combine them with neuromodulators, such as Botox, to increase your youthful appearance. Neuromodulator injections along the outer corner of the eye can help prevent or reduce wrinkles in the crow’s feet region. This filler and neuromodulator combo will have everyone asking for your skincare secrets!

Morpheus8, radiofrequency microneedling, can also be combined with filler and neuromodulator injections to further reduce fine lines and tighten any loose skin of the upper or lower eyelids.

You’ll be able to notice a difference immediately after having tear trough injections. It’s safe to expect little to no downtime following the procedure. Get ready to walk out of Park looking like you just woke up from your best sleep in years!
