Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Everyone experiences fine lines and wrinkles. The good news? They can be prevented and treated.

Fine lines are often one of the very first signs of aging and start to appear in our early twenties. As our skin begins to age, we start to notice fine lines appearing around the eyes and other areas on the face. A good way to spot them is by looking at the expression lines that appear when you smile, laugh, or frown. Over time and without preventative care, fine lines can turn into wrinkles, which are much more deep-set, remaining visible regardless of your facial expression.

There are many reasons why patients seek out treatment for fine lines and wrinkles. For some, it’s a preventative measure to ensure that their fine lines do not evolve into wrinkles. Whereas for others, it’s a way to achieve a more refreshed and youthful appearance.

What causes fine lines and wrinkles?

Over time, the collagen and elastin in our skin becomes damaged, leading to a gradual loss of firmness and elasticity. This process often results in the formation of fine lines, which can deepen into more pronounced wrinkles over time. And as we age, our skin may become more dry or dehydrated, making these lines even more noticeable.

Regardless of skin type, fine lines and wrinkles are an inevitable part of the aging process. However, external factors such as overexposure to UV rays and pollution, can also have a major impact on the appearance of our skin.

What are the most common lines and wrinkles?

Forehead Lines  horizontal lines across the forehead that appear when you raise your eyebrows. For many people these are the first lines that become static over time.

Glabellar lines often called frown lines, worry lines, or 11s, vertical lines between the eyebrows. These lines can develop due to stress, worry, and frequent frowning.

Crow’s Feet lines that appear around the outer corners of the eyes. In addition to the skin's delicacy, frequent squinting can contribute to the formation of crow’s feet.

How can I improve fine lines & wrinkles on my own?

Sun Protection

Having too much unprotected fun in the sun can accelerate the aging process in more ways than one. To combat this, make sure that you are applying (and re-applying) a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day. And yes, that means even during the winter.

Hydrate

To maintain elasticity and prevent premature wrinkling, it’s important to keep your skin hydrated. A great way to achieve this is by keeping a water bottle with you throughout the day and to apply a high-quality moisturizer both in the morning and at night.

Diet

It turns out you can eat your way to better skin! Antioxidant-rich foods like berries, nuts, and leafy green vegetables can help combat oxidative stress. Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds, help maintain your skin’s elasticity. To promote collagen production, include Vitamin C-enriched citrus fruits, strawberries, and bell peppers in your diet.

Skincare Routine

Consistency is key when it comes to your daily skincare. Opt for a gentle cleanser to preserve your skin's natural oils and use a mild exfoliant weekly to eliminate dead skin cells and encourage skin renewal. It’s also good to consider incorporating products with retinoids to boost collagen production.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking accelerates the aging process and can lead to premature wrinkles. The repetitive motion of pursing lips while smoking also contributes to the development of lines around the mouth.

Quality Sleep

Don’t overlook the power of a good night’s sleep. Make sure you’re getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to give your skin time to repair and regenerate.
