Sunscreen Decoded: Your Ultimate 2024 Mineral SPF Guide

Before we dive into our team's top sunscreen picks for soaking up the Ontario sunshine this summer, let's get scientific and break down what exactly we're protecting ourselves from and how. Understanding the basics can help you choose the best sunscreen for your skin type and lifestyle, ensuring you're fully protected whether you're sipping a spritz on the Manita patio or basking in the sun at Hanlan's.

Understanding UVA and UVB Rays

The sun emits two types of harmful rays that reach our skin: UVA and UVB. UVA rays are the aging rays, penetrating deeply into the skin, causing long-term damage like wrinkles, sunspots, and loss of elasticity. Think of UVA as the rays that contribute to aging your skin over time. On the other hand, UVB rays are the burning rays; they are primarily responsible for sunburn and play a significant role in developing skin cancer. While UVA rays are present with relatively equal intensity during all daylight hours throughout the year and can penetrate clouds and glass, UVB rays vary in intensity and are stronger in the summer months.

Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreens: What's the Difference?

When it comes to sunscreen, you have two primary types: mineral and chemical.

Mineral sunscreens, also known as physical sunscreens, use natural minerals like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to create a physical barrier on the skin's surface. This barrier reflects and scatters UV rays away from the skin. They are often recommended for sensitive skin types as they are less likely to cause irritation. We recommend mineral sunscreens most of the time.

Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, contain organic (carbon-based) compounds, such as avobenzone, octinoxate, and oxybenzone, which absorb UV radiation, converting it into heat, then releasing it from the skin. These sunscreens tend to be lighter and more suitable for daily use under makeup. The main reason we’d recommend a chemical sunscreen is if you’re going to be spending time in the water, or exercising. Otherwise minerals are your best bet.

The Park Team’s Mineral SPF Favourites Unveiled

Dr. Shoghi and Natasha, our aesthetician and recommend the Colorescience Sunforgettable® Total Protection Face Shield SPF 50. Perfect for those seeking a radiant glow without the sheen, this lightweight, hydrating sunscreen offers broad-spectrum protection against UVA/UVB, pollution, blue light, and infrared radiation.

For the makeup minimalists

For the foundation-free fans

Dr. Sophie loves the Colorescience Sunforgettable® Total Protection™ Face Shield Flex SPF 50. It offers light foundation-like coverage in a sunscreen, matching your skin tone for a smooth, natural finish. “I love the CS flex because I’m someone who doesn’t love to wear makeup but it gives me amazing foundation-like coverage in a sunscreen, no makeup required!”

Honourable mention

If you’re looking for an on-the-go SPF application that’ll reduce shine and can be used over your makeup, we’d go for the ZO Sunscreen + Powder Broad-Spectrum SPF.
