Curious About Lip Filler Swelling? Here Is What To Expect After Your Lip Filler Appointment

We know the story well, you’ve been talking about wanting lip fillers but are a little nervous to take the plunge because you’re not sure what happens after the needle. Gatekeeping is so 2020, so we’ve prepared a realistic timeline of what most clients experience after filler to help you feel confident heading into your appointment and beyond.

WHAT ARE LIP FILLERS?

Before diving deep into the post-treatment experience, let’s take a minute to discuss what lip fillers actually are. They’re one of our most popular treatments at Park Medical! We’ve all heard about Kylie’s and seen the over-filled lips filters on Insta, but what can you actually expect when you have your lips done at Park?

You might explore lip fillers for many reasons, including, but not limited to:

  • Wanting to increase the youthful look of your previously-plump lips

  • Addressing fine lines around the lips that make you look older than you feel

  • Accentuating the cupid’s bow to look more luscious and shapely

  • Creating stronger borders to increase differentiation between the lips and skin surrounding them

  • And more

Our skilled injectors are experienced with strategically placing fillers to enhance shape and volume without producing overdone or asymmetrical lips. We always aim for naturally enhanced lips – your friends will never know you had work done – unless you tell them!

Day one

Now that we’ve talked about the reasons, let’s get into the process – from the moment of injection all the way to your final result, here’s what you can typically expect from a lip filler experience.

DAY ZERO AKA TREATMENT DAY

Considerable swelling may occur, and you may notice your lips seeming a bit uneven. Don’t be too concerned about the shape during the first few days; often we see differences in how our lips look right after injection due to swelling. Be prepared for a bit of discomfort – sadly fillers are not a walk in the park for everyone. However, you can utilize light ice to keep swelling down and we’ll provide you with tips before and after treatment that should help your experience.

Days two and three

DAY ONE AKA DAY AFTER TREATMENT

At this point, inflammation and swelling is likely at its most severe. Swelling and some discomfort are normal after lip filler. Your upper lip may have a considerable projection and may be larger than the lower lip. Don’t freak out!

DAY TWO TO THREE

Swelling and tenderness will still be present. This is normal and you may find that this is already improving! Bruising is not significant for most clients, but you may have some. If present, bruising lasts about a week after your procedure – but can vary person to person.

Day four

DAY FOUR

You’ve made your way through the worst of the experience (honestly - it wasn’t that bad, right?) and you’ll start to notice that you’re getting to the other side. At this stage, you may see a bit of a projection in the top part of your lips – you may even look back on this time and think you may want more filler next time because your lips are looking so plump. It’ll start to be much more comfortable to eat and talk.

One to two weeks

ONE TO TWO WEEKS

After a week or two, your swelling should disappear, and your lip size will lessen a bit. This is when you’ll start to see the actual outcome of your treatment. From two weeks onward, you’ll notice normalcy in your lips. At this point, you’ll have your post-treatment appointment to assess symmetry and make sure you’re happy with the results. If we need to adjust we will. You might see some mild, intermittent swelling but you should be free to not pay too much attention to your lips at all – aside from how fabulous you look and feel!

Four weeks

FOUR WEEKS

You’ve made it! One month after treatment you’ll have reached your peak lip energy. You’ll then be free to smooch, smile, and shriek with the confidence of having lips you love!!

Lip fillers will last about 6 to 9 months depending on how quickly your body breaks down its own hyaluronidase so keep an eye on your lips around that time in case you want a refresh.

SOME FINAL TIPS

To best support your experience and set you up for a successful post-treatment experience, be sure to read and follow the pre- and post-treatment instructions provided by your injector.

For the smoothest experience, we always recommend:

  • Avoiding alcohol before and after your treatment

  • Staying well hydrated before and after

  • Keeping yourself upright for three hours after your treatment

We’re always here to support you through the treatment process. If you have any questions before, during, or after your treatment, feel free to reach out to our team!
